Confidence a passenger rail service can only be good for Christchurch and surrounding areas

Confidence a passenger rail service can only be good for Christchurch and surrounding areas

Mainland Rail will have talks with the City Council next month on finalising plans for its 'Event Express' service.

After One NZ Stadium opens in April, trains would carry thousands of fans to each event, from Rolleston, Rangiora, and Ashburton.

Chief executive Paul Jackson says Christchurch is one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest cities without passenger rail.

He says this could be a live experiment for eventual commuter rail.
