Maori are put into seclusion at a Whanganui mental health unit, more than anyone else

The Ombudsman has inspected both the secure forensic rehabilitation unit, Stanford House and the acute mental health unit next door, Te Awhina.

While Stanford House is an example of best practice, there's a significant number of failings at Te Awhina.

Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says Maori make up 40 per cent of the population at the unit ... yet account for 90 per cent of seclusion cases.

He says so far away from what's important to Maori, the likes of Tikanga and Te Ao Maori.
