NFL week two: Dallas Cowboys win thriller, Steelers botch kick-off, Travis Kelce drops

The second Sunday of NFL football for the season did not disappoint, with rivals producing a classic and a rematch of the Super Bowl.

The second Sunday of NFL football for the season did not disappoint, with rivals producing a classic and a rematch of February's Super Bowl.

There were major blunders, epic performances and plenty of showmanship across the league.

Here's what went down in week two of the NFL.

    1. Seahawks score from their own kick off

George Holani saw the ball bouncing toward the Pittsburgh end zone, wondered why Steelers kick returner Kaleb Johnson turned his back on a live football, and kept right on running.

All the way to the first touchdown of the Seattle Seahawks special teamer and running back's NFL career, and maybe a bit of justice for his team.

Holani's heads-up recovery of a kick off by Seattle teammate Jason Myers for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter gave the Seahawks a 10-point lead they never threatened to give away in a 31-17 victory over Pittsburgh that was as complete as it was surprising.

Seattle had just taken a three-point lead on a 54-yard field goal by Myers when his kick off bounced in front of Johnson, a rookie running back now moonlighting as a kick returner. The ball hopped over Johnson's outstretched hands at about the Pittsburgh five-yard line.

Johnson headed toward the sideline, thinking the play was over. It wasn't. Holani tracked the ball down just before it rolled across the end line for an unlikely score that put the Seahawks (1-1) up 24-14.

"Poor judgement by a young player," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said.

And excellent judgement by another running back-turned-special teamer. The Seahawks reviewed that exact scenario on Friday night, in the unlikely event it might turn up in a game. The lesson stuck with Holani, who never broke stride as Johnson casually walked to the sideline.

"That guy thought it was going out of bounds and it didn't," said Holani, who scored 34 times during his college career at Boise State, all of them in more traditional ways. "It was a lucky roll and I made the best of it."

So did Seattle, which bounced back from a loss to San Francisco in its opener by outplaying the sloppy Steelers (1-1), who delivered a dud in Aaron Rodgers's home debut.

    2. Colts party with the mascot

Few things in the NFL are better than a good celebration.

Touchdowns, sacks, interceptions: there are many good excuses for a player or team to show off during the game.

The best celebration of week two belonged to Indianapolis Colts safety Camryn Bynum after intercepting Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix.

After snagging the pick, Bynum sprinted towards the endzone he was defending to find the team's mascot, Blue, celebrating.

Blue has a rotund belly and shaking it is a signature move for the Colts' number one cheerer.

Bynum tucked the football under his jersey to increase the size his belly, and joined Blue in his signature move — the back and forth movement of his belly. That's the nicest way it can be described.

The Colts scored six unanswered points in the final quarter to win the game, 29-28.

    3. Cowboys win thriller over rival Giants

Brandon Aubrey kicked a 46-yard field goal on the final play of overtime after a tying 64-yarder to end regulation, and the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants 40-37 in a thrilling duel between star quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Russell Wilson on Sunday.

The Cowboys extended their winning streak against the NFC East rivals to nine games — the longest active streak in the NFL among division opponents — and Prescott beat the Giants for the 14th consecutive time since losing both starts against them as a rookie in 2016.

Overtime was on the verge of going scoreless after the teams combined for five go-ahead TDs in the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter.

That included a go-ahead TD apiece for Prescott and Wilson in the final minute before Prescott got the Cowboys just far enough for Aubrey's tying kick on the last play of regulation.

Wilson, who threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns, connected with Malik Nabors on a 48-yard TD for a 37-34 New York lead with 25 seconds remaining after Prescott threw a 6-yarder to George Pickens with 52 seconds to go.

The Giants just needed a field goal to win when Wilson threw an ill-advised deep ball with pressure, and Donovan Wilson intercepted at the Dallas 30 with 2 minutes left in OT. Prescott put Aubrey in chip-shot range with a 14-yard scramble.

    4. Eagles win Super Bowl rematch as Kelce's drop proves costly

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost their first two games of the NFL regular season for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

At home in a Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs were also looking to avoid losing three straight games, dating back to last season's Super Bowl.

In a defensive struggle, the pivotal moment came from a mistake by one of Kansas City's most reliable players.

Trailling 13-10 in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs' offence had finally clicked into gear.

They had driven down the field and had second down, six yards from the Eagles' end zone.

In the pocket, Mahomes rifled a rocket to his tight end Travis Kelce, who had created separation from his defender.

For a brief moment, Chiefs fans were on their feet as they readied themselves to celebrate another Kelce touchdown.

But this was not the Chiefs' day. The ball hit the hands of Kelce and popped into the air. Eagles defensive back Andrew Mukuba caught the tipped ball, and was streaking in the other direction.

The Eagles would go on to score a touchdown on the ensuing drive to establish a 10-point lead they would not surrender.

    5. Joe Burrow expected to miss three months

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow left Sunday's 31-27 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first half with a left toe injury that could potentially sideline him for most of the 2025 season.

Multiple reports on Sunday night indicated that Burrow sustained a turf toe injury that will likely require surgery. That procedure would sideline him for about three months.

Burrow was seen exiting the locker room by reporters sporting crutches and a boot on his left foot.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor had nothing to share after the contest.

"Nothing right now to be truthfully honest with you," Taylor said. "We had such a tight game I don't have all of the information right now."

Burrow was injured with 8:36 left in the second quarter, while pointing toward his left foot. On a pass play on second down, the pocket collapsed and Burrow was trapped underneath.

Burrow sat on the turf for a minute before getting up and receiving treatment in the medical tent. After five minutes in the tent, he began to make his way to the locker room under his own power before putting an arm on each shoulder of a medical staffer.

Burrow was 7-of-13 passing for 76 yards and a first-quarter touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase before departing.

Jake Browning replaced Burrow and was 21 of 32 for 241 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

He also scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 18 seconds left to cap a 15-play, 92-yard drive.
