A 123-run opening partnership between England's Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow has proven the key difference in their cricket World Cup round robin win over New Zealand
4 July 2019
The pair made the stand at better than a run-a-ball in the 119-run victory in Durham - Roy finished with 60 and Bairstow 106.
After posting 305 for eight, the hosts dismissed the Black Caps for 186.
England captain Eoin Morgan says the openers met expectations, because it's unrealistic to average 50 and strike at 120 given they bat all the way down the order and want to push the ceiling of what's possible.
New Zealand will be in a semi-final at Manchester next Tuesday night as the fourth qualifier, barring a world record Pakistani margin of victory over Bangladesh tomorrow night.
