The man at the centre of what some call New Zealand's biggest miscarriage of justice has died
4 September 2019
Peter Ellis has died after a brief battle with cancer.
The 61-year-old was found guilty in 1993 of abusing children at the Christchurch creche where he worked,
But there has always been doubt about the children's claims of satanic abuse, the way they were questioned and public hysteria about the case.
Ellis spent seven years in jail and refused to attend parole hearings - as that would have meant confessing.
Despite a ministerial inquiry and numerous bids for a pardon - Ellis has died with the convictions still standing.
