Motorists are being urged to take extra care in Southland, following the weekend of heavy rain

Motorists are being urged to take extra care in Southland, following the weekend of heavy rain

Flooding is affecting several towns and rural areas -- with some residents of Invercargill's Venus Street being offered alternative accommodation for the night.

Water levels remain high in most rivers, creeks and streams.

Several roads remain closed, and driving conditions could still be hazardous.

Drivers are being warned to watch out of surface flooding and slips, and be ware that not all flooding will be signposted.
