Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Hiddleston are among the nominees for this year’s Tony Awards

The two actors will both battle it out for the Best Actor in a Play gong at the annual awards ceremony - which is formally known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre - which are held to honour on-stage performances

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many theatres were forced to close for most of this year, meaning only 18 productions were eligible for nominations, which is roughly half the number that would be contending in a normal year.

The musicals ‘Jagged Little Pill’ and ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ led this year’s nominees with 15 and 14 nods respectively, whilst ‘Slave Play’ was the most nominated play with 12 nominations.

‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’ also received 12 nominations, including a Best Actress (Musical) nod for lead star Adrienne Warren.

And in a Tony Awards first, the limited number of plays eligible for nominations means that just one actor, Aaron Tveit, has been nominated for the Best Actor (Musical) category, for his role in ‘Moulin Rouge’.

The ceremony, originally scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, will be virtual this year, and as of the time of writing, a date for the show has not been announced.

There were 31 productions on the boards on March 12 before all theatres were ordered to close, with another eight due to begin preview performances ahead of the April 23 eligibility for this year’s Tony Awards.
