Great Barrier Island residents are frantically scrambling for higher ground

Great Barrier Island residents are frantically scrambling for higher ground

Civil Defence has issued a warning for New Zealand's northern East Coast - after a huge 8.1 magnitude earthquake near the Kermadec Islands, 1000km northeast of the country.

Great Barrier Resident Sue Daly says a police officer has been telling people on the island's western side of the island to head for a nearby ridge

She says there are concerns the tsunami may be worse than first thought.
