Our population's expected to get more ethnically diverse by 2043

Stats NZ population projections show the 'European or Other' ethnic group will reduce, while all others will increase.

Populations estimates and projections manager, Hamish Slack, says there are different drivers of that population change, for the different groups.

He say for the "European or other" group, the biggest driver is the ageing population, so over time deaths will increase relative to births.

Slack says in contrast, the Maori and Pacific groups have the opposite situation of a relatively younger population.
