The North Island's east coast is set to bear the brunt of a major storm system heading this way

Tropical Cyclone Cody is part way between Fiji and New Zealand -- and forecast to make landfall here some time on Sunday or Monday.

It's likely to accelerate in pace but weaken in force over the coming days.

MetService forecaster Peter Little says it'll will bring rain, wind, and monster waves, primarily to eastern coastal areas.

The Gisborne region, and parts of Hawke's Bay and Bay of Plenty, are likely to be in the storm's firing line.
