It's important Auckland has much better public transport...so it can help lower emissions for the entire country

A billion dollar climate change package is part of this year's proposed Auckland Council Budget.

It includes 600 million for new and expanded bus services, and hundreds of millions for cycleways, footpaths and tree-planting - and electrifying transport.

Greater Auckland Director Matt Lowrie says it's critical to get public transport working properly.

He says then people will flock to use it in droves.
