State Highway one, south of Picton remains closed following a crash this morning in which seven people, including a baby, died

A van and a refrigerated goods truck collided head-on just after 7.30 this morning.

Several others were injured: one person critical, one serious and one minor.

Tasman District Commander Inspector Paul Borrell says they're still working to notify next of kin.

He says officers in Canterbury are assisting because they have more staff and resources.
