An orthopaedic surgeon has failed to provide appropriate outpatient care to man with a broken femur

An orthopaedic surgeon has failed to provide appropriate outpatient care to man with a broken femur

The man required two surgeries for two fractures, but after discharge, he struggled with pain and difficulty moving.

Only one X-ray was taken at the first of three outpatient appointments - and showed the femur wasn't healing.

Six months later he needed more surgery.

Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Deborah James found the supervising consultant didn't organise investigation of his prolonged pain.

She says the surgeon also didn't document a care plan regarding the man's femur.
