The top of the South Island continues to reel from the damage caused by extreme weather

Over 400 Nelson homes have been evacuated over the last couple of days, 113 because of landslides.

Even more people have self-evacuated as severe weather continues to hammer the region, with a red rain warning in force again until 10am.

The Government's injected 200-thousand dollars into the Nelson Tasman Mayoral Relief Fund, which is now open to accept donations from the public.

Tasman Mayor Tim King says the community's generosity and caring spirit has been on full display over the last few days.

He says these sorts of events always bring out the best in people, with citizens pulling together to support one another.
