Heavy rain and flooding in northern Hawke's Bay overnight is another blow for a community still recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle

Heavy rain and flooding in northern Hawke's Bay overnight is another blow for a community still recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle

In the 12 hours since 7pm, MetService recorded 129 millimetres of rain in Wairoa -- with more than 25 millimetres per hour at some points.

Fire and emergency were called to flooded houses in Nuhaka and Mahia, and assisted with flooded cars on State Highway 2.

State Highway 2 between Napier and Gisborne is closed with fallen trees, slips and flooding in some spots.

State Highway 38 from Wairoa to Waikaremoana is also closed.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little says people are dealing with rain anxiety.

He says a lot of people are still trying to get their homes sorted to move back in, and heavy rain turns silt to mud again -- so it's really depressing for them.
