Local iwi are proposing bans on taking shellfish from three areas in the Hauraki Gulf - to help species populations

Local iwi are proposing bans on taking shellfish from three areas in the Hauraki Gulf - to help species populations

Fisheries New Zealand is inviting feedback on applications from iwi for temporary fishing closures at Waiheke Island, Clevedon's Umupuia Beach and parts of the inner Firth of Thames.

It would prohibit the taking of things like mussels, paua, rock lobster and oysters for two years.

Fisheries Management Director Emma Taylor says iwi are concerned for the long-term sustainability of certain species.

She says they want a removal of fishing pressure for a period to help them recover.

Public consultation on the proposals is open until June 7.
