Christchurch's sole soil disposal site will stay open, after previously being ear-marked for closure

A two-year resource consent extension's been granted for Burwood Landfill's Site C, after expiring at the end of June.

It was expected to have already reached capacity, but lower than anticipated soil volume deliveries will see it stay until mid-2026.

Resource Recovery Manager, Dr Alec McNeil says there's no other Christchurch sites to fill the gap, if it shuts.

He says Burwood continuing operations avoids costly transport distances for soil disposal, and gives the industry time to open new sites.
