A new format has produced contrasting fortunes for the New Zealand sevens sides at the second event of the new World Series season in Cape Town

With only the winners of the four pools advancing to the Cup semifinals - the Black Ferns Sevens have done just that with a 40 to 10 win over China and a come-from-behind 22-12 victory over Japan.

The New Zealand men - though - can only finish fifth at best after a 47-15 thumping by France resigned them to second in their pool.

They had earlier edged the USA 19-17.

The Kiwi women will face France just after midnight tonight for a place in the Cup final.
