A new AI led underwater robot could change the way the mussel farming industry works

A new AI led underwater robot could change the way the mussel farming industry works

    8 June 2025
Created at the University of Canterbury - the programme is able to navigate and scan shellfish to give key data on quantity and size.

Professor Richard Green, says it'll expand farming without it being expensive - and could be worth up to 80 million dollars per year for the mussel industry alone.

He says New Zealand is behind in automating the agricultural sector - and the device is able to replace multi-million dollar boats and hours of labour checking farms manually.
