    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Sunday 22 December


    north island



    Mt Egmont National Park and Tongariro National Park
    Periods of rain, with possible downpours, thunderstorms and hail, easing to showers tomorrow morning.

    Tararua Forest Park
    Rain, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail, easing to a few showers tomorrow morning.

    Remaining mountain areas
    Periods of rain, with possible thunderstorms, downpours and hail, easing to isolated showers tomorrow morning.

    WINDS
    Gale northerlies, easing to strong northwesterlies north of the Tararua Range tomorrow afternoon, then elsewhere in the evening.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    At or above 2800 metres.


    south island


    Rain or showers, with thunderstorms and hail possible north of the Haast River this afternoon and evening, easing to isolated showers between Nelson Lakes National Park and Milford Sound tonight, as well as the Kaikoura ranges. Showers becoming widespread and possibly heavy again for a time Sunday afternoon and evening.

    WINDS
    North to northwesterlies.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    2900 metres.
