    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Wednesday 20 August

    Mostly cloudy with showers, some falling as snow before dawn. Showers clearing from Te-Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki this evening.

    WINDS
    Gale southerlies.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    1200 metres, sloping to 900 metres in the south, rising to about 1300 metres everywhere this evening.

    Kahurangi to Nelson Lakes National Parks, including Mt Richmond Forest Park
    Fine weather.

    Kaikoura Ranges
    Mostly cloudy with showers, falling as snow this morning.

    Arthur's Pass to Mt Aspiring National Park

    Fine west of the Main Divide. In the east Mostly cloudy with isolated showers before dawn. Fine spells from afternoon.

    Fiordland National Park
    Fine in the west, but a few showers south of Te Anau and in the east.

    WINDS
    Gale southerlies, gradually easing today.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    1200 metres but 1800 metres in the south. Becoming 2000 metres about and west of the Main Divide this afternoon but 1400 metres in the east.
