    Mostly cloudy with a light showers possible, but rain about the Tararua Range. Rain developing west of Whirinaki from late afternoon, possibly heavy.

    Strong to gale northwesterlies, severe gale about the Tararuas at first, then elsewhere in the evening.

    Kaikoura ranges
    Cloudy periods. Rain about the inland range this evening.

    Kahurangi National Park
    Showers, turning to rain with heavy falls for a time this afternoon and evening, then snow lowering to 1400 metres at night.

    About and south of Nelson Lakes and Paparoa National Parks
    Showers. Heavy rain for a time this morning and afternoon, with possible thunderstorms about and south of Arthur's Pass National Park, then snow lowering to 700 metres in Fiordland and 900-1000 metres elsewhere.

    WINDS
    Strong or gale northwesterlies, severe gale in exposed Fiordland places, and becoming severe elsewhere this morning and afternoon.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    1800 metres in the south sloping to 2800 metres in the north, lowering to 1000 metres in the south and to 1600 metres in the north tomorrow.
