    NZ Mountain Forecasts


    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Wednesday 20 January


    north island


    A few showers, with long fine spells in eastern areas. However, a period of rain
    with possible thunderstorms, spreading north this evening and overnight. Snow to
    1500 metres in the south late tomorrow.

    WINDS
    Severe gale northwesterlies, easing to gale in exposed places tomorrow.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    Above 3000 metres today, lowering to 2000 metres tomorrow.


    south island



    Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, the Southern Alps and Fiordland
    Periods of rain or showers, with heavy falls, squally thunderstorms and hail.
    Snow to 900 metres for a time in the south.

    Kaikoura Ranges
    Fine, apart from a few showers in the west, turning to rain there with heavy
    falls for a time this evening.

    WINDS
    Severe gale westerlies.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    2800 metres, sloping to 1400 metres in the south. Lowering to 1600 metres in the
    north for a time.
