Recreational Marine: Christchurch Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 1631hrs Thursday 05-Feb-2026 by MetService Situation: The ridge remains slow moving and dominates the country most of today, however a front pushes onto the lower South Island by the end of the day. The front then weakens as it moves northwards over the South Island tomorrow, while the ridge persists across the North Island. Over the weekend, the ridge dominates central and northern New Zealand, while a front moves onto the South Island during Sunday and weakens. On Monday, a trough moves onto central New Zealand from the Tasman Sea, while the ridge extends over southern and northern parts of the country. Forecast for Inshore waters from Lyttelton Harbour to the Waimakariri River mouth Nil warnings Thursday: Easterly 15 knots, easing to variable 5 knots in the evening. Sea slight. Fine apart from high cloud. Easterly swell half a metre rising to 1 metre. Friday: Variable 5 knots. Southwest 10 developing for a time in the morning, then easterly 10 knots developing about midday. Rising to easterly 20 knots in the afternoon, then changing westerly 10 knots late evening. Sea becoming moderate for a time in the afternoon and evening. Fine. Then partly cloudy, with a chance of an evening shower. Easterly swell 1 metre dying out. Saturday: Easterly 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots for a time in the morning. Cloud clearing and becoming fine. Sunday: Turning southwest 10 knots early. Turning easterly 10 knots later. Partly cloudy. Monday: Easterly 10 knots. Occasional rain.
