Strong northeasterly winds, reaching severe gale with gusts to 120 km/h, and heavy rain are expected for parts of the upper North Island tonight and tomorrow. Meanwhile, a ridge moves eastwards off the South Island. Cyclone Tam continues to move slowly southwards over the Tasman Sea on Good Friday and during the weekend. A moist northeasterly flow associated with the cyclone covers New Zealand during most of the period, but southeasterlies develop over the southern South Island on Sunday. Forecast issued at 1628hrs Wednesday 16-Apr-2025 Valid to 8 pm Wednesday for Inshore waters from Great Mercury Island to Mayor Island to Matakana Island. Gale warning. Wednesday: Easterly 30 knots gusting 40 knots, rising to 35 knots gusting 45 knots this evening. Sea becoming very rough this evening. Poor visibility in showers.
