    GALEs for COOK and STEPHENS

    Situation:
    Today a front over Fiordland pushes north up the South Island. Meanwhile, a deep low in the Tasman Sea approaches the country from the west while its attached fronts move across central and northern New Zealand. Tomorrow the low crosses the country followed by cold southwesterly flow. On Friday, a new low develops to the east of the country, spreading a strong cold southerly flow across the nation. This flow persists on Saturday but weakens on Sunday.

    Forecast issued at 1642hrs Wednesday 04-Jun-2025
    Valid to 8 pm Wednesday for Inshore waters from Waitarere to Pukerua Bay and out to Kapiti Island.
    Gale warning.
    Wednesday: Northeast 20 knots gusting 30 knots, rising to northerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots this evening, gusting 55 knots in possible squalls. Sea becoming rough this evening. Waves may rise rapidly during squalls. Poor visibility in rain, heavy at times. Squally thunderstorms possible. Northwest swell 1 metre, rising to 2 metres.
    Thursday: Northerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots, rising to northwest 35 knots gusting 45 knots in the morning, easing to 25 knots gusting 35 knots in the afternoon. Sea becoming very rough for a time. Cloudy periods. Fair visibility in a few showers. Northwest swell 2 metres, rising to 4 metres for a time.

    Outlook until midnight Sunday:
    Friday: Northwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots, easing to variable 5 knots in
    the morning. Becoming southerly 15 knots in the afternoon. A few
    showers. Northwest swell 2 metres dying out.
    Saturday: Southerly 20 knots. Cloud clearing and becoming fine.
    Sunday: Southerly 20 knots. Partly cloudy.
