    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 2030hrs Wednesday 16-Apr-2025 by MetService

    Situation:
    Cyclone Tam is expected to move southwards into the Tasman Sea tonight. Strong northeasterly winds, reaching severe gale with gusts to 120 km/h, and heavy rain are expected for parts of the upper North Island tonight and tomorrow. Meanwhile, a ridge moves eastwards off the South Island. Cyclone Tam continues to move slowly southwards over the Tasman Sea on Good Friday and during the weekend. A moist northeasterly flow associated with the cyclone covers New Zealand during most of the period, but southeasterlies develop over the southern South Island on Sunday.

    Valid to 8 pm Wednesday for Wellington Harbour and the south coast from Sinclair Head to Baring Head.
    Wednesday: Easterly 15 knots but 20 knots about the south coast. Sea moderate about the south coast. Cloudy. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre. For Castlepoint - Southeast swell 1.5 metres rising to 2 metres.
    Thursday: Easterly 15 knots but 20 knots about the south coast. Sea moderate about the south coast. Cloudy. Poor visibility in scattered rain developing in the evening. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre. For Castlepoint - Easterly swell 2 metres rising to 2.5 metres.

    Outlook until midnight Sunday:
    Friday: Northeast 15 knots. Rain, easing. For the South Coast and Palliser
    Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre developing. For Castlepoint - Easterly
    swell 3 metres.
    Saturday: Northerly 15 knots. Partly cloudy. For the South Coast and Palliser
    Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre dying out. For Castlepoint - Northeast
    swell 3 metres easing.
    Sunday: Northerly 15 knots, easing to variable 5 knots later. Partly cloudy.
