    Storm warning for BRETT

    Situation:
    Cyclone Tam is expected to move southwards into the Tasman Sea tonight. Strong northeasterly winds, reaching severe gale with gusts to 120 km/h, and heavy rain are expected for parts of the upper North Island tonight and tomorrow. Meanwhile, a ridge moves eastwards off the South Island. Cyclone Tam continues to move slowly southwards over the Tasman Sea on Good Friday and during the weekend. A moist northeasterly flow associated with the cyclone covers New Zealand during most of the period, but southeasterlies develop over the southern South Island on Sunday.

    Valid to 8 pm Wednesday for Bay of Islands Recreational Marine Area.
    Gale warning.
    Wednesday: Easterly 40 knots gusting 50 knots, rising to 45 knots gusting 60 knots this evening. Sea becoming high this evening. Poor visibility in rain, heavy at times. Northeast swell 4 metres.
    Thursday: Easterly 45 knots gusting 60 knots, easing to northeast 35 knots gusting 45 knots in the afternoon, then to 30 knots gusting 40 knots in the evening. High sea easing in the afternoon. Heavy rain, with poor visibility at times. Thunderstorms possible from afternoon. Northeast swell 4 metres, rising to 5 metres for a time.

    Outlook until midnight Sunday:
    Friday: Northerly 20 knots. Showers. Northeast swell 4 metres easing.
    Saturday: Northerly 20 knots. Showers. Northeast swell 3 metres easing.
    Sunday: Northerly 20 knots, easing to 10 knots early. Showers, clearing.
    Northeast swell 2 metres.
